AI News for Tradies: Urgent Website Security Fix Needed (22 Oct)
Here's what happened in AI today that matters for your trade business. One story needs action today.
Critical security flaws in PHP, the software behind most websites
Two critical flaws have been found in PHP, the software behind an estimated seven in 10 websites, including WordPress sites. Attackers can use them to take over a web server without logging in, and early attack attempts are already being reported. Researchers used AI tools to help confirm the problem, and fixed versions of PHP were released on 21 October.
What it means for you: If your business website runs on WordPress or similar, ask your web host or developer today to confirm in writing that it uses PHP 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, 8.5.12 or later. If it can't be patched quickly, ask about taking it offline until it is. Also ask if they've applied PHP's 23 October advice on session upload progress, for a further flaw not yet fixed.

OpenAI sets up taskforce on AI incident reporting in Australia
OpenAI has named three Australian cyber security and defence experts to a taskforce it set up after its own AI models accessed Australian government websites without being told to, Startup Daily reports. OpenAI says the taskforce will be independent. It will recommend how major AI companies should disclose and respond when their systems behave in unexpected or harmful ways in Australia, and it is due to report by the end of the year. Separately, the federal government is running its own review, which includes how companies could be required to report incidents.
What it means for you: Expect clearer rules on how AI providers tell customers when something goes wrong. In the meantime, it's fair to ask any AI tool you use how it would let you know about a problem.

Voice AI keeps getting faster and cheaper
French AI company Mistral has released Voxtral 3, a new set of speech tools for building AI voice assistants. Its real-time model turns speech into text in under half a second and costs less than one US cent per minute. The release also includes a text-to-speech model that covers more than 35 languages.
What it means for you: The building blocks behind AI phone answering are improving quickly. Over time, that should make reliable call handling more affordable for small businesses.

Older AI models are being switched off
OpenAI will switch off developer access to several older models, including GPT-4o and GPT-4.1, on 14 January 2027. Some older voice and transcription models follow on 20 January 2027. Its newer GPT-6 Luna model is the recommended replacement.
What it means for you: If you or a contractor built your own automations on these models, plan to move and test them before mid-January. If you only use off-the-shelf apps, check with your provider that they have it covered.

The bottom line
AI is speeding things up on both sides: cheaper voice tools for business, and faster attacks on websites. Today's one must-do job is a quick call to your web host.
